The Natural Resources Department are looking for an Agricultural Adviser (Land Management & Grazing Systems) to join our existing team in the Falkland Islands where sheep farming is the major form of land use with around half a million Merino, Polwarth and Corriedale sheep produce wool for export on mostly family run farms.  The Agricultural Service fosters a viable, sustainable and internationally competitive agricultural industry through applied research, extension, skills development and regulatory programmes. 

The Role

The Agricultural Adviser (Land Management & Grazing Systems) is responsible for developing and leading the land and grazing management programme by providing advice to industry that is objective, practical, economically sound and tailored to the needs of individual farm businesses to achieve the key objectives of the Natural Resources Department Business Plan through:

  • Provision of pragmatic advice on soil, pasture and strategic land management.
  • Advancing sustainable agricultural practices that can increase the productivity, resilience and profitability of the Falkland Islands sheep flocks, cattle herds and horticultural industries.
  • Leadership and stakeholder engagement in order to effectively lead business-specific, on-farm Farmer based Research and R&D programs with land managers.

The role also includes managing the Department’s Farmer-based Research Program, which includes implementing and overseeing the conduct of farmer-centric on-farm experiments to ensure that advances in grazing technology and grazing systems management are evaluated, and ultimately advanced, in the Falkland Islands.

The Person

The person will be a team player and a strategic thinker with good attention to detail who is able to achieve results and inspire confidence to ensure an integrated and effective service is provided.  Excellent interpersonal skills are essential plus the demonstrated ability to communicate and network effectively via a range of methods with farmers, co-workers and others in the agricultural sector. 

The postholder will hold a degree in Agricultural Science or Natural Resource Economics with specialisation in agricultural production, or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years’ postgraduate experience in soil and plant sciences in mixed crop-forage and grazing systems.

The successful applicant must also be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of land-use systems, particularly in relation to weather extremes, soil degradation and agro-ecosystems vulnerable to mid-long term climate changes.

The Package

  • Fixed Term Contract up to 4 years.
  • Salary Range, basic starting salary £37,725k up to £40,502 per annum depending on qualifications and experience
  • Eligibility for a 25% Gratuity (taxable).
  • 41 days paid leave, 30 days annual leave and 11 public holidays.
  • Relocation Allowance, to help with moving costs.
  • Flights Package for you and any recognised dependents accompanying you to post at the beginning and end of contract and additional annual return flights contingent on the duration of the contract.
