The Falkland Islands is a beautiful South Atlantic archipelago made up of 778 islands. There is an abundance of wildlife including 5 species of penguin along with a diverse range of aquatic mammals, birds and plant life. The Falklands is a unique culture with a vibrant economy and a lifestyle where the life / work balance compliments rather than conflicts with family life.
The Falkland Islands delivers person centred support and intervention along with a very child focused, solution based approach. As we are a small community we are also able to provide individualised packages of support that allow us to truly adapt service provision that is needs led rather than resource led.
You will be accountable for leading and managing a small but experienced generic team of professional social work practitioners who provide a comprehensive social work service to all the Islands’ residents. You will play a key role in developing policies, procedures and strategies that improve methods of working, service provision and practice, whilst ensuring resources are used to their best effect. In addition, as a member of the Directorate’s Senior Management team, you will also be expected to actively contribute to ensuring that Social Services is fully represented in wider corporate and departmental planning agenda. You will also have management responsibility for the benefits system and Probation Services and work closely with partner agencies including Early Help, Health, Police and Community Support Services.
We are looking for a first class leader with excellent judgement and management skills who can effectively engage and motivate people at every level. If you have a solid track record of successfully delivering comprehensive, effective and sustainable Social Services and of helping your staff to effectively achieve best practice standards in all that they do, then we want to hear from you.
In return for your passion, creativity and hard work, we offer you a real opportunity to help shape the future of a Nation’s social care provision.

The Working Environment
Health & Social Services
The Health and Social Services directorate provides primary, community and secondary healthcare in the Falkland Islands, as well as social services and welfare provision for those most in need. However, Social Services and Early Help Services remain independent of the Directorate at their own offices which are open to the public. We operate a 24 hour service with an on-call rota which operates out of office hours.
Falkland Islands Government (FIG)
The Falkland Islands is a British Overseas Territory, with full internal self-government in place. We have our own legislation which is based on UK legislation with some anomalies to meet the needs of the islands.
As the largest employer in the Falkland Islands, we offer many unique and fulfilling job opportunities, across the full spectrum of public services. Our responsibilities include those typically managed by central government – taxation, legislation and policy, as well as those usually managed on a local level such as town planning, health and social services, and education. FIG also provides services specific to the needs of the Falkland Islands, such as fisheries research, power generation and the Government Air Service, FIGAS.
